Untitled 1

Acrylic on canvas / 24 x 30 / 1996

In 1996 I decided to try to transform doodles I had done in design meetings or during phone calls into paintings on canvas (as I had always imagined them). It proved more difficult than I expected finding the right process and medium and translating the small motions of fingers on a pen into the larger motions of wrist and arm with a paintbrush. This is one of the first paintings that I felt was actually somewhat of a success. It went through many transformations to get to this point — rinsing paint off, scrubbing paint off, overpainting, and not knowing when to stop. But I did stop and eventually sold it to someone who visited the studio I had at Western Avenue for a while.
